Happy Mom’s Day

My mom’s a little dynamo, always on the go: traveling, working on charities, special projects, helping friends. She’s generous, kindhearted, stubborn and strong-willed. She’s a fighter, a survivor of multiple wars and unfathomable personal sacrifice. She’s fearless to challenge. She tries hard to learn, to grow emotionally and spiritually. For an uber-conservative Republican immigrant, she can be downright progressive in her paradigms. She’s a force. And let’s face it, such a strong personality means that she can be a challenge, but it also means that she can be pretty great.

In 1999 we lost my dad and ever since my mom has struggled with the painful loneliness that can only come from losing your long-time spouse, your best friend, your other half.

Recently she has found a new joy and a new companion. She is 72, he is 79.

They’re an inspiration.

They travel together, drive the countryside, hold hands, go out to eat, commune with friends. They hit the gym every day and take care of each others health. They laugh and seem to delight in each others company. They’re headed off to Vietnam—he for the first time in more than 35 years—for six weeks of travel and later this year they’ll be taking a pilgrimage to India for a Buddhist retreat. They have fun at a pace that we envy.

Holy cow, what could we do for her on Mother’s Day to top all that joie de vivre?

Short of giving her another grandkid, which we’re working on (hello!), we knew we couldn’t make her any happier. So instead we tried to capture all those smiles on film.

Happy Mum’s Day

We love flowers in this house. Love, love, love ‘em. Despite being uber-budget conscious we’ll spend $4 a week on fresh cut flowers for the kitchen. I always have a sprig of something in a cute little vase in the bathroom, in our bedroom and on my desk. It’s the best $4 a week that we spend.

We also love giving flowers to friends and family. For mum’s day Jack wanted to give my mom a corsage. He was pretty insistent about it and made sure that we made time in our day to get her one. (Just another reason I love this dude.)

Instead of paying $20 for a corsage we decided to make her one. I knew she’d love it so much more if she knew that we were thrifty about it. And it’s ridiculously easy.

Step 1. Get floral tape at local hobby store. $1.39

Step 2. Cut some flowers from your garden. We cut two baby cala lilies, a cala lily leaf and two sprigs of asparagus fern.

Step 3. Tape ‘em together. Trim ends. Get a stick pin (I pulled one from my sewing box) and you’re done.

If your mother is like my mine, she’s doesn’t want much for Mother’s Day except for her kids (and grandkids) to be healthy and happy. Check. Check. We’re healthy. We’re happy.

Every year I rack my brains for something to give her that a) doesn’t cost a lot of money (she LOVES it when I’m thrifty), b) she can actually use/appreciate and doesn’t add clutter, and c) that’s a little different than the year before.

Seriously, what do you get the mom that has everything?

This is my mom, Wendy.

I do not say this lightly or just because she is my mom, but I have the most amazing mother. I’m thankful every day that she is my mom. She’s a strong, courageous, funny, exceptionally smart, progressive and incredibly caring woman. She’s got an adventurous spirit that we, her children, can only hope to live up to.

She is our inspiration and our rock. No matter that she’s only a hundred pounds and barely five feet tall … her spirit is bigger than all of us.
